I finally got around to syncing my calendar. Since I use my own domain with GMail, i found https://www.goosync.com/ to be the best service around. It works perfectly, but I have decided to use the free calendar only version a few months before going for the commercial version, which supports the company which made it and adds other features as well such as syncing contacts and tasks.

mp3

A couple of months ago I bought an mp3 player for the E61, but unfortunately it was licenced to the IMEI so I couldn't re-use it on my E71.

Handy Clock

I purchased an application called Handy Clock from Epocware which I've been using on my old E61. I wasn't sure if it would work on the E71, but I searched my old registration email and used the exact same download link and code and it worked great! I've had similar success migrating my mobipocket account.

Converting and transcoding mkv HDT files for the Nokia E71

I wanted to convert a file in the mkv format today, it worked straight away in VLC, but Nokia Video Manager doesn't understand this format. mkv is the matroska container format, so I needed to transcode the stream using some other tool. I considered just extracting the files and convert with Nokia Video Manager, but that din't work out since the file was an image stream and an ac3 sound stream. I found a tool called Super, which worked nicely.

Below is a screenshot of the settings I used, it worked great but I'm not sure if it's the absoloutely best settings.

I installed Nokia Video Manager and tried to convert a few files I had without success, and googling around it turnes out that many other people had the same issues.

It wasn't hard to fix though, I just didn't remember that I've never really installed any codecs on my laptop because VLC eats anything I throw at it.

The DivX codec can be found at www.divx.com

The XviD codec is at  www.koepi.org

I decided it was time for a technological upgrade from my Nokia E61 which is two years and 3 months old and decidedly the best phone I have ever owned.

I have read good reviews about the E71, and looking forward to faster speed and more memory.

A slight concern is the smaller screen and keyboard, which was great on the E61.I'll update this page with notes on the E71 as I use it in the comming months.

The phone still looks like a pocket calculator.
